In John 21.18-19, Jesus told Peter that he was going to die the death of a martyr for the cause of the gospel. Peter had earlier said that he would die for Jesus; but Jesus informed him that he wasn't ready and that he would three times deny that he didn’t know him. John 13.36-38.
After Jesus resurrection and Peter's reinstatement toward the Lord. Jesus expected Peter to make good on that claim to die for Him. This is why people should be careful what they say, because one may have to live what they have said. Eccl 5.1-7. So, Peter said that he would die for the Lord and now he's going to be given an opportunity to do so. 2 Peter 1.13-15.
