“He is the top preacher in America!” “He is one of the top preachers in America!” We have heard this said about men who are ministers; however what do people mean by the term, “top” preacher? Who and how is it decided, and what makes a “top” preacher? Does man invent the term, or does God decree it?
I checked the Bible, and I have not found where God ever addressed any of the Old Testament prophets as “top.” Next, I searched the New Testament concerning preachers of the gospel, and I never saw one of them addressed as a “top” preacher. So, the term exists outside of God’s authority, and if we are to be people of the Bible, we need to address things in the way that the Bible teaches us (1 Peter 4:11; 1 Corinthians 11:2; 2 John 9). If a person is addressed as a “top” preacher, such a statement is saying that one preacher is above others, and that God has a special ranking system.
But God has no favorites and also teaches man not to have favorites (James 2:1-9; Acts 10:34; 1 Cor. 4:6; 2 Cor. 3:4-6, 12:6; Romans 12:3; Galatians 6:3-4).
So, call a man a preacher, and not a “top” preacher, because anything else is not speaking as the Bible speaks, but rather the doctrine of man (Mark 7:6-13).
